How treatment works
Root canal treatment removes infected tissue from inside a tooth. The canals are cleaned, filled and sealed to help prevent further infection.
01
Make the tooth comfortable
A local anaesthetic is usually given before treatment to numb the area.
02
Remove the infected tissue
A small opening is made in the tooth so the dentist can remove the infected pulp.
03
Clean and shape the canals
The inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and shaped, ready for filling.
04
Fill and protect the tooth
The canals are filled and sealed. A crown may be needed to protect the tooth.
Treatment may take several appointments. Your dentist will explain the approach suited to your tooth and the care needed afterwards.
